What is Ceramides?
Skin Type: Can be used by all skin types
Skin Concern: Sensitivity, dryness, acne
Overview

An important substance found naturally in the skin as a structural component to fortify the epidermis' first line of defense - also known as our protection barrier - against sensitizing agents and external stress factors, as well as reducing moisture loss from skin surface. It is a fatty acid that functions as the "glue" that holds cells together for a tight cellular junction, promoting a healthy and intact skin barrier with microbiomes in balance.
However, improper use of cosmetics, changes in weather, aging...etc will lead to a depletion of ceramides, and hence a disrupted protection barrier that is susceptible to dryness, irritation, and bacterial infection. Studies have also shown that people with eczema have less ceramides than usual, making it a necessity for those with eczema to incorporate ceramides into their skin care routine for a positive prognosis of the condition.
Derivatives/ Variations
With 12 types of ceramides named numerically in sequence, with types 1-6 most being most effective in improving skin dryness through reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
Since skin sensitivity, eczema, atopic dermatitis, development of dry lines are all associated with TEWL, using products formulated with ceramides and especially types 1-6 can help to prevent a plethora of skin problems namely those above.
