What is Bisabolol?

Overview

Found in a variety of plants with calming properties and most notably the German Chamomile, Bisabolol is the substance extracted from those plants that harness the power to mediate inflammatory pathways in the skin by regulating inflammation-inducing enzymes. Also shown to increase the penetration of ingredients it is formulated with into the skin, Bisabolol is an effective skin soothing agent with the additional benefit of enhancing delivery of active ingredients into the skin to be utilized by cell systems, optimizing the efficacy of formulations when incorporated into skincare formulas.

Derivatives/Variations

There are 2 common forms of Bisabolol – plant-derived vs. synthetic. The synthetic form of Bisabolol has been shown to demonstrate a 50% less efficacy than its naturally derived counterpart, and with the synthetic form more commonly contaminated with an impurity called Farnesol.

Ingredient with Synergistic Effects

Hyaluronic Acid

A skin soothing and hydrating ingredient suitable for all skin types and especially beneficial to calm sensitive and irritated skin. Works in synergy with Bisabolol to minimize symptoms of inflammation such as redness and dryness by reducing trans-epidermal water loss – a culprit that leads to sensitivity.

Ceramides

As dry and sensitive skin is commonly associated with impaired barrier, by pairing Bisabolol and Ceramides the skin can be fortified from inside out, as ceramides is the “glue” that binds loose cells thereby strengthening the first line of defense against sensitizing agents in the surrounding environment.
