What is Sulfur Spring Clay?
Skin Type: All
Skin Concern: Acne, congestion sensitivity
Overview
Replete with minerals including magnesium, iron, and aluminum which are essential to various skin renewing and protecting mechanisms, the sulfur clay extracted from thermal springs of Central America also purifies the skin by absorbing excess sebum, thereby helping to prevent acne and skin congestion. Also naturally infused with sulfur, this ingredient confers antibacterial effects as well as promoting loosening and shedding of skin, reducing the occurrences of acne by way of minimizing infection and clogging of pores from excess buildup of dead skin cells.
Derivatives/Variations
There are quite a few types of clay ingredients targeted for oily skins, and I have introduced a brief description of each through differentiating their functions:
-
Charcoal Clay: deepest cleansing, oil-absorbing, and pore clarifying effects, but with lowest amount of minerals. Suitable for very oily, acne, and congested skin.
-
Kaolin/Bentonite Clay: has good anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and oil-absorbing effects, with a good amount of minerals to support skin metabolic events. Suitable for oil-prone, combination, acne and congested skin.
-
Sulfur Clay: has the best anti-bacterial effects from the presence of sulfur. Also has the most amount of minerals due to its extraction from thermal springs. Suitable for all skin types to improve acne and congestion prone skin due to its gentle yet effective nature.
Ingredient with Synergistic Effects
Salicylic Acid
an oil-soluble exfoliating agent having the power to dissolve sebum plugs in pores to reduce occurrence of comedones and acne. With Sulfur Spring Clay’s ability to also absorb excess skin sebum on the skin surface, the 2 ingredients work synergistically to reduce shine and acne when formulated together.
-
Glycolic Acid
well proven to remove dead skin cells to reveal a brighter skin surface, Glycolic Acid can be formulated with Sulfur Spring Clay to remove excess shine and restore a naturally glowing and dewy skin tone.
-
a skin soothing and hydrating ingredient suitable for all skin types and especially beneficial to hydrate and balance acne and congestion prone skin. Best used after treatment with Sulphur Clay to hydrate the skin after removing excess oil to improve skin moisture balance.
