Characteristics of combination skin:
While the hydration (water) and sebum (oil) balance should theoretically be uniform across the skin, in fact many people have combination skin characterized by extreme skin behavior over the same facial region, most commonly oilier on t-zones (forehead, nose, and chin) and drier on the cheeks. Although such behavior is typically linked to genetics, environmental changes, stressors and improper use of cosmetics can exaggerate its condition making combination skin one of the most challenging skin types to manage.
Skin problems commonly associated with combination skin:
-mismanagement of oily regions can lead to congestion, acne inflammation, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
-dry regions that are not adequately moisturized can lead to skin sensitivity, and(or) premature formation of fine lines and dry lines
-once the loss of balance becomes more exaggerated, the opposing behaviors can make finding a skincare routine that caters to both extremities even more difficult
Skincare routine tips for combination skin:
-avoid products that are overly stripping or moisturizing
-hydration using the skin’s natural humectants such as Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) and Hyaluronic Acid can balance the skin and alleviate extreme behaviors
-when using highly targeted products for acne, extreme dryness…etc, spot treat problem areas and avoid contact with regions of opposing characteristics
-for extreme cases, divide the skin into different regions and use specific skin care products that cater to their varying needs
